Research Interest:


Most of my work is based on a recurring finding in human clinical medicine: despite improvements in our understanding of pain mechanisms and despite progress in the field of pharmacology and analgesic techniques, treatment and management of pain, not only acute but also chronic, remains a poorly resolved problem. This is particularly true in the cephalic area, especially when care and oral surgery, or even technical act, as simple as it is, will result for some a complete absence of pain and provoke for other severe pain. How can we explain this variability? Pain is a complex sensory experience including sensory-discriminative aspects but also affective-motivational and cognitive aspects. The sensory-discriminative aspect includes spatiotemporal characterization of a painful stimulus and determines the intensity of it; the affective-motivational aspect to it, gives a more or less unpleasantness of the stimulus and causes, depending on the value, different behavioral and autonomic responses.


My first research topic aims to study the relationship between pain and autonomic nervous system. Clinical and experimental studies in humans and in animals have recently established the existence of relations between cardiovascular system and sensitivity to pain. More recently, studies have paid particular attention not to the basic hemodynamic status, but its responsiveness to various psychological or physical stimuli. They have demonstrated that the amplitude of the cardiovascular reactivity would have a positive predictive value of the sensitivity to pain. Some authors have finally suggested that the relationship between cardiac and pain intensity may have a clinical interest. For example, in hypertensive patients with coronary artery disease have not only a less pain to the implementation of an experimental painful stimuli, but more frequently develop silent ischemic attacks during physical effort. It was also shown that hypertensive individuals have significantly less headache and reported fewer post-operative pain following a prostate surgery.


My second research theme based on the study of the emotional component of pain. By assigning pleasure or displeasure to a remarkable event, every emotion has a fundamental influence on behavior. Thus, the adaptive value of emotions related to pain depends closely on its motivational power, manifested by an appropriate behavioral repertoire of the importance of the current threat. In the longer term, altered emotional responses are a factor of chronicity painful process. A large current research shows that pain is an interoceptive modality, which helps to control the emotional state during the painful experience. The importance of bodily responses in the construction of mental states associated with emotional perception is not an own question to the field of pain. I thus studied the role of autonomic responses in the construction of emotional states that accompany orofacial nociception in rats. I was particularly interested in the participation of the medial prefrontal cortex, considered as an important cortical contingent of the construction of emotion and control of the autonomic nervous system, in two models of nociception, one acute and the other chronic.
